Acer is planning to sell Linux-based PCs to the UK market, the company told ZDNet.co.uk.

According to Gianpiero Morbello Acer, Acer's VP of Marketing and Brand:

"We have shifted towards Linux because of Microsoft. "

Acer announced three new Android smartphones, as well as an Android 2.1 version of its Liquid phone. Acer's BeTouch e400 and BeTouch E110 fall into the mid- and low-end range, while the Acer "Liquid e" and Formula One styled Acer Ferrari smartphone both appear to target the upper ranges of Android phones.

"I am always happy to find alternative applications of creativity. Today’s focus is on Acer or, more specifically, on Acer’s so-called Linux notebooks." This is pretty disgraceful!

For so many years, Taiwan-based Acer was an under-the-radar computer manufacturer. Although it has been the number three player, behind Hewlett-Packard and Dell, for a long time, even the company's previous business strategy tended to keep it anonymous. All that is changing now.

Acer's Nvidia Ion-based micro desktop PC, Revo, will go on sale in the UK on 5 May, with Ubuntu Linux among the available operating systems.

Following a number of Windows Mobile 6.5 based phones, smartphone market newcomer Acer has now announced its first Android model. It's based on a Snapdragon processor, likely clocked at 1 GHz, with 256 MB RAM. The Android 1.6 operating system (code named "Donut") is housed on its internal 512 MB Flash drive and there is a microSDHC slot for adding extra storage.
