Let's call that site the Geek Ranch. (When I say "let's" I mean us, not everyone. While its primary focus is to appeal to geeks, we will have to call it something else for general marketing.) As far as a site, it is about 265 acres of land in the mountains of the Tisey Preserve near Estelí, Nicaragua.

While there is a lot more to it than just being for geeks, here is the geek angle. The property will have "geek cabinas" scattered around a pine forest within the property. If you want to escape from the rat race for a while--a month, six months, whatever--you will be able to inexpensively rent a private cabina. It will come with Internet connectivity, maid service and all your meals. In other words, no routine responsibilities.

One of the first things that confounds new users is that GNU/Linux is not a single operating system. Instead, it's the general name for hundreds of closely related operating systems -- distributions or distros, as they are usually called. All the distros share the Linux kernel and include many of the same utilities and programs, but differ in purposes and the resulting customizations.

We won't go into what exactly makes one a geek here (hint: it has something to do with knowledge, learning, books, skills, and technology, but not fandom). If you are it, you know it. And if you're looking for it, you know it. So here's some pointers to places where the original geek culture is still alive.

The open source survives and thrives by the sheer number of distros available. Proprietary software is just a small pond compared to the enormous number of distros available for open source. Again, distros are qualitatively superior and robust give developers the powerful tools that inspire their creativity, which they crave. One of the most popular distros ever is the Debian distro.

I guess the title tells you too much. The reality is that I was given some MP3 files and wanted to put them on a normal audio CD so the non-geeks here could listen to them. Thus, consider this a geek to non-geek conversion article.

There are many Linux distros and we have unique reasons to like them. To fully master Linux, start with the top of the list - the most user-friendly - and slowly choose the next one, until you reach the bottom of the list - the most challenging - where you can get your hands dirty.

Can geeks find love? Certainly -- but extolling the wonders of GNU/Linux on the first date may not be the best way to go. On the other hand, just think of all the ways a Linux geek can say "I care"...
