In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular.

I don’t hate Drupal. I admit I don’t like it too much but this is not the point of the post. The point is not to bash Drupal vs WordPress. It’s only to explain why it will be never as popular. If you plan to invest in Drupal for your new site, or in creating Drupal extensions for sale, or to grow a career in Drupal development, and so on, popularity is important thing to consider.

Following on the third beta release two weeks ago, we are ready to present Drupal 6.0 beta 4. Since the previous beta release, we have committed over 80 fixes to the Drupal 6.x code. This beta version includes some usability improvements and lots of bug fixes for issues which the testers and contributed module upgraders encountered. The first beta announcement provided a comprehensive list of high level improvements made since Drupal 5.x, so in this announcement we'll concentrate on how you can help ensure that Drupal 6 is released as soon as possible and is as rock solid as the previous Drupal releases that you've grown to love!

Drupal is an excellent free software content management system, written in PHP. It's a good choice if you have to build a new site for non-technical users or customers, as both content editing and site administration can be done directly in the main site by authenticated users, and there's very little markup for those users to learn.
When I started my tenure as marketing lead for the Haiku project in 2006, my highest priority was to renovate the project's Web site. Haiku had been using a custom-coded site which was showing its shortcomings as the project and the community grew in size.
