Well folks, it's that time to announce a new stable Slackware release again. So, without further ado, announcing Slackware version 12.1!

Linux Weekly News directs readers to a Slackware Linux list post detailing the package versions and included components for the upcoming Slackware 12.2 release. The major components (such as X, and the kernel) are now frozen, and most of the remaining changes are smaller adjustments and documentation updates.

Slackware 13.37 brings many updates and enhancements, among which you'll find two of the most advanced desktop environments available today: Xfce 4.6.2, a fast and lightweight but visually appealing and easy to use desktop environment, and KDE 4.5.5, a recent stable release of the 4.5.x series of the award-winning KDE desktop environment.

Today, Pat Volkerding published a massive amount of package updates to the slackware-current tree. Some of the absolute highlights mentioned in the ChangeLog are indication of a big step forward for Slackware, and most importantly: KDE 3.5.10 is gone, replaced by KDE 4.2.1.

If you haven't played with Slackware within the past couple of years, you may still believe that the word “easy” doesn't go well with the words “update” and “package management”. But, two fairly new utilities, “slackpkg” and “sbopkg”, may help to change your mind.

I thought of this interesting question the other day while messing around with Slackware 9.0 which was one of the last versions of Slackware to come on a single disk. The goal was to try to take a Slackware 9.0 install to the most recent stable and it was almost accomplished.

The Slackware team released version 13 of its venerable Linux distribution, now supporting 64-bit computers. Slackware 13 provides "completely reworked" X packages, upgrades to KDE 4.2.4 and Xfce 4.6.1 desktops, a new .txz package format, and support for Ext4 and the GRUB bootloader, says the project.

Pat Volkerding and the Slackware team released the latest version of Slackware Linux, 12.1, on May 2. Even though it is a "point one" release, the list of new features reads like what other distributions would consider a major new version. Slackware 12.1 features the latest KDE 3.5.9, Xfce 4.4.2, and a number of improvements, especially to udev.
