I’ve tried a lot of backup software for Ubuntu, but none was quite right for what i had in mind: simple interface, the ability to select the folders which to backup, auto backup, simple restore to a selected date and most important: to backup only the changed files and folders if a previous backup with the same files and folders already exist. That untill i found Simple Backup.

The (Not So) Simple Backup suite, short just nssbackup, is a fork of the SBackup project, the Simple Backup suite. nssbackup is basically using the same technology that Unix administrators have been used for decades but it adds some some intelligence for interaction with users within a graphical interface.

Backerupper is a simple GUI utility program to make scheduled backups of specified directories over a network. It is not intended for full system backup, but just to make archive copies of a user’s personal data.

This program can do simple backups and syncs over a network or locally.It uses tar and rsync in the background. Mephisto Backup was made with the Java programming language. The key feature of this program is the ability to backup your system to an image and copy it to a Linux Live DVD for future restoration. The user can then take that cd and move his or her system to any PC.

There are tons of possible backup solutions for the Linux desktop (and/or server). I have covered a number of possible solutions here on Ghacks. One of my favorite (and the one I use most often) is Luckybackup (see my article “Luckybackup: Linux backup made easy“), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of really good solutions.
