Over the past couple of weeks I've been involved in a college class on how to write a research report. It's certainly not the easiest class, but it's been informative. Being a geek myself, I chose for my research topic, the ever volatile subject of "The best ways to market Linux" (I'll share the research report when I'm done with it).

A new report shows that that slide has put Internet Explorer’s market share at just under 60%.

"...Firefox web browser, which is distributed by Mozilla, has a 28-percent share of the European market, according to a report released in July by French web analytics company, XiTi Monitor..."

Earlier this week, an IBM X-Force report said that the open source Joomla! content management system led in unpatched vulnerabilities.

NetApplications is out with a couple of new metrics of market share for operating systems and browsers, and the news is good for open source. Topping their findings, Microsoft Windows' market share has dropped below 90 percent for the first time in its measurements. The share erosion is largely attributed to increased interest in the Mac platform, but Linux is cited as on the rise as well.

We're told Linux is the only OS with a growing market share: Windows and Mac OS X actually shrank. The Net Applications report also shows Windows 7 already dwarfing all versions of Mac OS combined.

2008 was an eventful, breakthrough year for many open source companies, and 2009 will be even more so, especially in terms of business purchasing patterns, software business model shifts, and enterprise software stack evolution.
