The mainline Linux kernel will gain new support this quarter for virtualized SANs (storage area networks). Emulex says its LightPulse virtual HBA driver gives each virtual machine (VM) on an enterprise storage server independent access to the SAN peripheral, through a shared HBA (host-bus adapter).

Linus has released the 2.6.25 kernel. After nearly three months of development and the merging of over 12,000 patches from almost 1200 developers, this kernel is now considered ready for wider use.

With ATI Catalyst 9.8, ATI finally has support for newer kernels. The Linux 2.6.29 kernel was released in March, but it has taken until today for AMD to release any support for this kernel. However, at the same time, they have also released support for the Linux 2.6.30 kernel, which arrived back in June.

A common question is how to compare Fedora [1] and Debian [2] in terms of recent updates and support. I think that Fedora Rawhide and Debian/Unstable are fairly equivalent in this regard, new upstream releases get packaged quickly, and support is minimal. They are both aimed at developers only, but it seems that a reasonable number of people are running servers on Debian/Unstable.

I read about Steven J. Vaughan’s article on which he tries to explain why you don’t see as much corporate support in Debian as you see in other places. The conclusion of Steven’s analisys, it seems, is that Debian is inmature. I will attempt to respond to it from a Debian perspective.
