4Front Technologies is proud to announce the release of the source code to Open Sound System (OSS) v4.0. The software currently runs on Linux, SolarisTM, SCO UnixWareTM and FreeBSD platforms.
OSS is a cross platform API that provides drivers for most consumer and professional audio devices for UNIX® and POSIX based operating systems, including Linux. Owing to its open architecture, applications developed on one supporting operating system platform can be easily recompiled on any other platform.

This is actually more important
This is actually more important than it seems. OSS was originally free software, then went proprietary and was abandoned by the free software community in favor of ALSA (though some distributions continued to maintain it). Now, the company is releasing the latest versions as free software again (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open_Sound_System#Free.2C_proprietary.2C_free)

yes is good, but really... there
yes is good, but really... there is a reason why we ditch in favor to alsa, and now alsa is much better than OSS.
they had their chance and decided to go proprietary...
I can say this because I make music on my computer and trust me when I say I will never leave alsa/jack for OSS as how it stands today.
