“From each according to his ability. To each according to his need.” The above is often given as the socialist credo. However, it is much older than socialism. It actually appears in the Bible in the book of Acts, describing how the early church functioned. It also describes how Linux functions. What they both have in common is that the Bible and Linux are parts of a larger socialist plot.

Microsoft Windows remains the dominant desktop operating system with approximately 90% of the client operating system market. If Microsoft's monopoly is ever going to be challenged by Linux, there has to be an easy way for Windows' users to be able to learn about this rival operating system.

Windows 7 is all set to release on October 22nd 2009. This latest installation in the Windows series from the Redmond giant is touted as their best so far.

I have learned that I don't have to be tied to Windows anymore. If I choose to use the Windows operating system, I can. Why would I do this? Some software may not work well through emulation, so I can use Windows. Most of what I do, does not require Windows, so it's much more secure than my Windows base applications.

What a coup Microsoft has pulled off. After getting millions of people all over the world to shell out for the sugar-frosted turd that was Windows Vista, here we are three years later at the Windows 7 launch, and Microsoft has people practically falling over themselves to pay more money so they don’t have to use Vista any more.

A few months back I posted an article reviewing Ubuntu 8.04, “Hardy Heron.” In the comments section, one person brought up a good point: how can I, as a socialist, support Ubuntu? I’ve been meaning to write an article about this since then.

One of the biggest issues when moving away from Windows is software availability; what we do on a computer isn’t defined by the operating system, but the third party software we use on that operating system. Because most of the software written for Linux operating systems is open source, it may be difficult to find a replacement for the everyday software that you use on Windows or Mac OS X.
