One of India's 28 states plans to distribute 100,000 Linux laptops to students there. ELCOT (Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu Limited) apparently decided to use Linux exclusively after being put off by Microsoft's bundling tactics for academic users.

"CHENNAI: Techies advocating free software on Sunday issued a rallying call to expand the “digital freedom struggle” as they celebrated the anniversary of the GNU/Linux project launched in 1984.

India on Thursday gave Microsoft a thumbs-down in the war of standards for office documents. In a tense meeting at Delhi’s Manak Bhawan, the 21-member technical committee decided that India will vote a ‘no’ against Microsoft’s Open Office Extensible Mark Up Language (OOXML) standard at the ISO.

"The Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) is deploying Suse Linux Enterprise across 30,000 desktops and 1,880 servers in schools in southern India."
