At the Maemo Summit Conference in Amsterdam, Nokia gave out over 300 N900 phones running Maemo 5. The N900 is the successor to the N810, over a hundred of which were handed out at Akademy a year ago. Read on for some opinions about the N900 and the results of 3 days of hacking.

I've had the opportunity evaluate a pre-release N900 for a few weeks now, and while you can expect a full review in an upcoming issue of Linux Journal, I wanted to give you a quick look into what the N900 is like from the perspective of your average Linux geek

I have had my N900 for about one month now. During that time I have enjoyed several “Wow!” moments. But, the N900 had one more big Wow! moment in store for me, one that I truly did not expect.

Nokia N900 runs on the new Maemo 5 Linux open source software. The N900 lets users open multiple application windows and run simultaneously while taking advantage of its cellular features. The N900 offers a high-res WVGA touch screen, QWERTY keyboard and a Mozilla powered browser.

I won't go into every detail and feature because those have been covered ad nauseum already, including the fact that it has by far the best web browser(s) and the best multi-tasking experience of any comparable device out there right now.

I’d like to talk about the Nokia N900 Linux-based phone I’ve been testing for the past 6 weeks. It’s the first Maemo powered device to feature phone functions. Does this move signal a new direction for Nokia? Nobody seems quite sure just yet, but the hardware and software are causing a lot of interest in the Linux community.
