Openmoko, the company that first gained attention for its Linux-based phone platform, launched a new pocket-sized open source product in time for this holiday season, the WikiReader. The WikiReader is an inexpensive ($99), low-power, 4-inch square touchscreen LCD display device pre-loaded with the text of three million Wikipedia pages on a microSD card.

Free online encyclopaedia Wikipedia is celebrating a new milestone – an article on Norwegian actress Beate Eriksen added on Monday took the English-language version of Wikipedia over the three million article mark. The encyclopaedia, which first went online in January 2001, now contains a total of more than 13 million articles in more than 200 languages.

The Wikimedia Foundation has received another major donation. Today Google announced that it is donating two million dollars to the non-profit organisation behind Wikipedia.

Online encyclopaedia Wikipedia.com launched the ‘Wikipedia Academy’ here today in a bid to increase its popularity and to reach out to large number of rural masses in the country. 'This is the first in Asia after the launch of the first Academy last month in Germany' Wikipedia.com Founder Jimmy Wales told reporters in Chennai.

With its open source operating system, the OpenMoko Project was once the pride of the community. Now, however, development of the new model will cease.
