Over and over, I hear people asking me “how do I get dual monitors working in Ubuntu“. Well today, I will show you (note the video) how to make this easy with a fairly modern NVIDIA card, two flat screen LCDs (one DVI, the other VGA) and a little understanding how getting two monitors working in Ubuntu Linux is a snap, once you understand the basics.

Most of us go away from our computers. When we do we don’t much care to come back to see our screen just the way we left it. We have been trained that a screensaver should take the place of our work or our play on our monitors. I have been asked numerous times “How do I have screensaver X on my Linux desktop?”

When giving a presentation you have to get the projector working quickly and correctly otherwise it might get embarrassing. Many laptops have a special button to control the external screen but that does not always work with Linux or with some configurations, as sometimes there are too many things for the computer to figure out. Best thing to do is learn a couple of commands to control the external VGA output and do the thinking ourselves.
