One of the new features in Ubuntu 9.10 is the Ubuntu Software Center. In a rather bold move Canonical has migrated away from the standard Add/Remove Software tool and (in the future) plans to drop Synaptic and Gdebi as well. Is this a move just for “moves” sake?

If you are very new to Ubuntu and have come from Windows where you got most updates by visiting the various vendors of each application and doing so separately; you are in for a shock!

Ubuntu Software Center (initially Ubuntu Software Store) was released with Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala and it currently has only a few of the features it was designed for, being just stage 1 out of 4.

If you are using an OS based on the Synaptic Package Manager, you must have noticed by now that when trying to install a new package through Synaptic, it draws in miscellaneous packages that are needed for the program to work. These packages are called dependencies.

Apple started the App Store revolution. Canonical hopes to continue it with the Ubuntu Software Store. The Web has been buzzing a few days about the store - which debuts in Ubuntu 9.10 but may really come together in Ubuntu 10.10. Is there demand for an Ubuntu Software Store?

The new Ubuntu App Center is an interesting addition/replacement to the old Add/Remove Applications program and the complicated synaptic package manager. It promises to bring simplicity to installing new apps to Ubuntu.

The Ubuntu Software Store debuted last month in the latest alpha release of Ubuntu 9.10.  Since its announcement, however, there has been more than a little debate over the application's name, if not the concept behind it, with many commentators questioning the implication of the word "store."  Here&'s the scoop.
