Today, the last piece of the puzzle for roaming laptops in Debian Edu finally entered the Debian archive. Today, the new libpam-mklocaluser package was accepted. Two days ago, two other pieces was accepted into unstable. This collection of packages allow for two different setups for roaming laptops.

This is not a rant about Debian vs. Ubuntu. I used both, loved both, and I'm currently using Debian Lenny. It's not about Debian versus any other distribution either: in fact, I only tried a few other distros, and most of them were Debian-based. Here are the top 10 reasons for which I enjoy using Debian:

A few weeks ago, I installed Debian for the first time on the desktop. Once, a friend and I installed a console-only version on another desktop and we connected remotely to his hosted game server which also ran Debian, so I hoped I should be a bit familiar with it.

The Debian Project is pleased to mark the 17th anniversary of its start. As the official project history states: "The Debian Project was officially founded by Ian Murdock on August 16th, 1993. I was hanging out in ##linux on Freenode this morning, willing to help anyone out who needed it, and I came smack into the middle of an argument about why Gentoo is the best distribution in the world, and Debian is the worst. As the conversation progressed, it was clear that the one running Gentoo had never touched a Debian system, or was even half-way familiar with its structure.

Over the last couple of weeks I’ve caught myself wondering why there are so many “easy-to-use” Debian-based distros. I used to think of Debian as the distro that was way up there, a long long way to go, in terms of user-friendlyness. I didn’t think that I was going to be able to use Debian. It just seemed to hard.

It has been quite some time, actually years, since I started using Debian. I just thought to write the reasons for which I really like Debian compared to other systems.
