Zenwalk is a desktop-oriented Linux distribution originally based on Slackware. The latest stable release is Zenwalk 7. It was made available for download on March 25, 2011, roughly ten months from the last prior stable release – Zenwalk 6.4. The Zenwalk project makes four editions available – The Standard Edition, Core Edition, GNOME Edition, and the Openbox Edition.

So, I was concerned when I learned of a split in the ranks of the team of developers responsible for one of my favourite Linux distributions, Zenwalk.

Zenwalk has always had the reputation as being a distro for the more seasoned Linux user, with the release of Zenwalk 6 Gnome, has this changed? Has this Slackware based distro taken the route of Ubuntu? Short answer – not really, but then why should it?

Zenwalk is one of the most promising Linux distribution. Based on Slackware, the distro is lightweight, simple and stable. We decided to make some questions to Jean-Philippe Guillemin, Zenwalk’s creator, regarding future plans and developments about this “GNU-Linux Operating System”.

The end of May the Zenwalk team came to some disagreements with its project lead Jean-Philippe Guillemin and some other team members. The result is a new distro called Salix OS.

Zenwalk is a fast distribution and has low system requirements so you can use it on older, slower computers with no problem. Zenwalk 6 is no exception to this rule. The new Zenwalk 6 looks a lot like 5.2 so it will feel familiar.

Zenwalk Linux is a Slackware based distribution introduced in early 2004 that aims to be fast, easy, modern. Zenwalk tends to have a very loyal user-base in addition to leaving most distro hoppers and reviewers impressed. Most agree with Zenwalk's latest tagline: It just works.
