A few days ago, I took a look at batch renaming application KRename. In this short video tutorial, I show you how to invoke KRename from within Konqueror, and walk through a simple renaming workflow with a folder of images.

Renaming a big set of files can be a right chore. For example, if you’ve just imported a set of digital photos, they’ll usually have really unhelpful and undescriptive filenames such as DSC_0000.jpg.

Mass Rename is a simple pair of shell scripts which make it easier to move, rename, or copy multiple files at once. It is intended mainly as an automatic and simple way to rename multiple files with a customizable prefix and a progressive number. It is also possible to modify the rename format simply by editing one of the scripts.

Suppose you have a directory full of files with filenames such as oldfile, my-new-file, some_document. Suppose you would like to rename these files to File1, File2, file3.

Giving your photos meaningful names makes it significantly easier to keep tabs on them. Of course, renaming each and every photo by hand is not particularly practical, especially if you take dozens or even hundreds of photos each day. This is when digiKam’s Rename feature can come in rather handy.

Metamorphose is a free, open source program to mass rename files and folders for Windows, Linux and Mac OS X.

The application has many great features such as using photo EXIF data or mp3 ID3 tags for renaming, undo renaming operation in case of mistakes, preview every item to be renamed before applying changes and of course basic features like adding a prefix, [...]

Renaming a company can be a torturous process. Developing the new brand, getting the word out, and answering questions can be long and grueling, and at least some customers are bound to be upset, and possibly quite vocal about it. Not everyone is willing to brave these waters, though Nokia obviously is, as it announced today the renaming of its corporate Qt division, Qt Software.

As a file manager, Gnome Commander has the look and feel of early workhorses like Norton Commander and Midnight Commander. Among its many talents, Gnome Commander is a life-saver when it comes to synchronizing files. Something I wish were available in more apps I use is the ability to do advanced renaming of files, and GC does this with support for various types of meta-data.
