I went with Joomla for a project on a few of its strengths: Fine-grained content control, a very active developer community that cranks out lots of decent third-party extensions, and a fairly sophisticated community of template developers who make some decent designs.

I've used Joomla recently and I'm really surprised!
I think main problem is still the set of components and modules that people can use, indeed I've must spent my time modifying the code of external elements.
However, it has made giant steps (last time I've used it, his name was Mambo!!!!) and I'm really satisfied.
Make sites is now more easy! :-)

I've only used a handful of CMS's
I've only used a handful of CMS's and the most flexible one for me has been phpWCMS. I've also looked at Typo3 but the long learning curve (about a month) put me off last time.
