Songbird is a free and open source software audio player and web browser founded by Rob Lord and developed by Pioneers of the Inevitable , with a stated mission "to incubate Songbird, the first Web player, to catalyze and champion a diverse, open Media Web."

Today we'll be covering a few more Linux Media Players and showing you each of them, and what makes them special.

Totem Media Player is one of the most widely used media player amongst Linux user. Given its ability to handle many formats using the versatile G-Streamer framework, it has become a one stop all player for users who favor simplicity over the advanced VLC Player.

Songbird is a media player built on Mozilla that is often described as the Firefox of media players because of the growing number of plugins and feathers (skins) that can be applied to the player.

The other feature worth writing about, is ROSA Media Player, or ROMP. It is a media player with a feature you will not find in Totem or other media players in other Linux or BSD desktop distributions. It is actually a fork of SMPlayer and was first released in November 2011.

I'll start with a quote from the official Songbird homepage, which goes like 'Songbird promises to be the Firefox of media players'. Although not (yet) as popular in the audio players world as Firefox is in the one of web browsers, Songbird looks and offers an interface which integrates both powerful browsing features and music collection management.
