LibreOffice, the community-driven fork of OpenOffice, appears to have a very healthy and growing group of code contributors. The Document Foundation has published new stats that portray the climbing rates of developer involvement both in terms of numbers of people and numbers of code commits.

The official KDE Project currently consists of 4.2 million lines of code. Cornelius Schumacher has applied the lines to individual projects and published the stats.

After the release of Linux 2.6.27, kernel developers are currently busily integrating patches for the next kernel version into the main development branch of Linux. This usually involves discarding some old code and adding new code though on balance, there are usually more new lines than old ones, making the kernel grow continually.

2.6.29 is made up of 11,010,647 lines of code, with the number of developers who contributed to it reaching a record high of 1,166. Unlike the lines of code that make up the kernel, the number of developers has not been constantly climbing.

The casual view of open source software is that the code always comes first: releases are made when the code is ready, new contributors prove their chops by the quality of their code, and so forth.

More developers are contributing more code to the development of Linux, and are speeding up in the process, according to a new study from the Linux Foundation. The latest "Who Writes Linux" report is now its second year, tracking the development of Linux from the 2.6.24 kernel to the recent 2.6.30 kernel release.

4,273,291 lines of code, that's the size of the KDE core modules, which are released as the official KDE software distribution, as of today.

Current conditions: the 2.6.30 kernel was released on June 9. The 2.6.30 development cycle saw the addition of almost 12,000 individual changes from over 1100 developers representing some 200 different companies. 2.6.30 has 624,000 more lines of code than 2.6.29.
