Best Buy has started selling the Asus Eee Laptop to consumers on their website. The Asus Eee Laptop comes pre-bundled with the Xandros Linux operating system.

Asus chairman Jonney Shih sprang a surprise during Intel's Computex keynote today with the announcement of a $189 laptop.

The notebook uses a custom-written Linux operating system, much like the OLPC, though unlike the OLPC, Asus has chosen a more conventional interface.

It didn't take the enterprising community of Asus Eee PC users long to come up with some great tweaking tools for this Linux-based ultra-low-cost laptop. Just a few weeks after the official launch of Eee PC, the first tweaking utilities started to appear on the EeeUser forums.

Like a famed race horse or a classic book, you don't just throw away a laptop because it's banged up a little. Even if it seems outdated and underpowered, most any laptop is still small, quiet, and relatively low on power consumption, making it a seriously valuable spare to keep handy—even without a working screen.

So, here I am now, having lived with - and used when I can - an Ubuntu Linux laptop for the last couple of months. I've been trying it out alongside my usual laptop (Sony Vaio running Windows XP), my new MacBook Pro, and a Vista notebook that we also have in the house.

It's hard to believe, but It's was exactly six months ago this week that I picked up a black ASUS Eee PC 700 laptop. At just 4GB of internal storage and a 900MHz Celeron processor, the little book-sized laptop definitely has its limitations, but I'm not looking to replace it with anything soon, except maybe a newer model of the same laptop.
