A lot of people tend to shy away at the mention of even the word Linux, myself included. Being raised on a Windows machine, and pampered by an easy visual interface, I was nervous about trying out something that used so much of the command line. I like clicking, scrolling, and buttons that flash. Using a command line made me nervous.

KDE launched Plasma in 2005 to revitalize the desktop interface, which the project said had remained "essentially the same" as it was in 1984. The initiative sought to renovate the KDE desktop codebase for the upcoming KDE 4 release, as well as to make innovations to KDE 3's conservative interface.

Today I came across a nice article by cnet on Linux user interface. The article obviously was geared towards new users who might be interested in Linux. This is a welcome change where everyday more reputable blogs and technology websites are opening up to Linux and introducing it to their reader base, who otherwise probably would have never have known about linux or dared to try it out.

One thing we have learned from KDE4 is that its not a good idea to make drastic change to a desktop environment that the users have been used to for a long time. Hopefully the Gnome developers will keep that in mind as they work on Gnome 3.0 release for next year.

They're munging Gimp up again. I say it over and over again. And truly, if every interface overhaul was so great, then why would they need to change it again? Huh? Hmmm? Where's all the 2.4 advocates saying that 2.4's interface change was so perfect, now?

One of the first things most people do after installing a Linux distribution is to tweak settings and customize the desktop interface. One of the things I normally do in customizing the desktop interface is change the panel icon. Up until now I have been doing this by fiddling around in /usr/share/icons/$icon_theme and I never liked replacing system files even if the change was easy to revert.
