There’s a line between closing an application and leaving it open. But aren’t there times when you wish you could force an app not made for the notification area into that “quick recall” space? Well now you can with a handy little tool called AllTray.

one thing i have always wished for is the ability to run thunderbird in the background so that if i close is i want it to minimize to the system-tray/notification area and inform me real time when i have a new mail.

I guess you could use a screenlet or something similar to embed a terminal into your desktop, but I want to have it transparent, with no titlebar or border and basically to look like my wallpaper has a terminal. For that, i used Compiz and this is what it looks like:

Yakuake is a Quake-like terminal, which means it behaves just like any console in Quake or usual first-person shooter games. It supports global keybindings and can be invoked with F12 and hided with the same keyboard shortcut when you finished your job with it. This way it will run in background but it won't eat your taskbar or system tray space.
