It's been some time since the last Games post here at FOSSwire. Free software isn't all work and no play, right? We have briefly mentioned both subjects of this Games post before, in a round-up of 13 great open source games, but never in much detail - Neverball and Neverputt.

Nouveau’s 3D support recently became available in Rawhide / Fedora 13 with an update to the mesa-dri-drivers-experimental package. I was impressed when it ran Compiz, really impressed when it ran Neverball, but running Spring is nuts.

After recommending those excellent real-time strategy (RTS) games for Linux, let's move on to this other type of strategic gaming referred to as turn-based. A game is considered turn-based if the game flow is divided into well-defined and visible parts, called turns or rounds.

Gaming shares many roots with open source, and many games coders would see themselves in a similar light to free software coders – as creative hackers exploring the cutting edge of computing. A game may not have any useful function other than the game itself, but computers are only as good as the last game you played.

Linux might not have as much games as Windows (or game consoles) but people enjoying this wonderful open source operating system can have fun with games too, as there are a lot of free games for Linux available, even some huge commercial ones. Even Linux games are a niche market, Linux gaming has got a pretty colorful history so far. So what’s the state of Linux gaming?

Best racing game ever runs on linux!

Disclaimer: I'm not a racing game fan, in general I don't like racing games at all. So if I say something is the best racing game ever, it's not based on the usual things most racing fans would think make up the best racing game.

Last night I was looking for a linux game, to do some mindless gaming on the and of a tiring day.

An area where open-source games have traditionally lacked is with regard to delivering high-end graphics capabilities that can compete with modern day commercial games.
