Practically the entire planet has heard of Ubuntu due to it’s colossal marketing machine, free CD’s, huge online community and related user blogs. But what about all the other distros that haven’t made it to Distrowatch yet?

If you take a gander at the number of Linux distributions listed at Distrowatch, you'll find there are tons of "forks" and "offshoots" from one distribution to another. With Linux, we have the freedom to do that, but I'm curious if there are any Linux flavors that are truly offensive to people.

Why is it that Linux distros divide and multiply? And do we have a better name for how and why that's done than, say, "forking"? That question goes through my mind when I look at the ever-changing Top 100 list at DistroWatch, and when I look, for example, at the many children of Debian, including grandchildren through Ubuntu.

A Linux distro is essentially a collection of software applications built into a complete operating system on top of the Linux kernel. Some distros, like Ubuntu, openSUSE, Fedora, and Mandriva have companies that back them, while others, like Debian, do not.

This time around I decided to try out another distribution I'd never used before in the shape of MEPIS. I started off with simplyMEPIS 6.5 which seemed a bit dated but luckily it was pointed out to me that 7.0 is due out very soon.

I have used more than eight distros — AntiX, Debian, Fedora, Fluxbuntu, gNewSense, Linux Mint, Wolvix and Xubuntu — but these eight are the ones that I use most, talk about most and would recommend to those looking for a distro.
