The new version of GNOME 2.28 has been released (complete release notes).

The GNOME release team have confirmed that GNOME 3.0 will be released in September 2010, with a GNOME 2.30 release in March 2010. The announcement came from Vincet Untz and the GNOME release team and is a result of feeedback from the GNOME development community.

With Gnome 2.26 safely out the door the Gnome development team is now planning for Gnome 3.0, a release it expects to make in March next year. Responding to growing criticism that the Gnome project lacks vision the team says that the 3.0 milestone release will have to have “big user-visible changes”.

The Gnome team has released an update of the Gnome Desktop Environment, version 2.27.5. The highlights of this new release are Brasero 2.27.5, fixed memleaks, lot's of bug fixes, added documentation to libbrasero-burn and lots of Translation updates.

Back in July of 2008 we learned of GNOME 3.0 as plans were laid out during the GUADEC '08 conference to make the GNOME 2.30 release their "3.0" version in March of 2010. However, it looks like GNOME 3.0 may not hit in H1'2010 but rather September of next year.

A few days back we reported on a new Mutter release, which is the window and compositing manager for GNOME 3.0, and now with the GNOME 2.29.91 beta release coming up on Wednesday there is also the release of another new GNOME 3.0 component. Perhaps the single biggest new component for the GNOME 3.x stack is the GNOME Shell and this is the package that just reached version 2.29.0.

GNOME Shell is a component of GNOME 3.0, the next generation of the GNOME desktop environment scheduled for release in March 2011. We did introduced Sonar, Elementary and Ambiance GNOME Shell themes before and we have one more to showcase, Equinox GNOME Shell theme.

GNOME 2.26, the latest version of the open source desktop environment for Linux, has been released. Ars pranced through the garden with the new GNOME release and found that it delivers some nice incremental improvements.
