HTML5 and Flash have been used to great effect in recreating traditional desktop apps that can be run through your web browser. Google is so confident that web apps can replace your desktop apps that it has released the ChromeOS, which is not much more than the Chrome web browser presented as a desktop operating system.

New Mozilla survey found that the chief reason for Firefox's popularity as a developer tool is its large ecosystem of Web development add-ons. Almost 90 percent of those polled cited Firefox's developer-centric add-ons as being central to their Web development efforts

Konqueror as a web browser still unfortunately lags quite a way behind Firefox in terms of compatibility. For that reason, many KDE users stick with Firefox, despite the poorer integration between the desktop environment and the browser. Firefox for Mobile (codenamed Fennec) is the name of the build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for smaller non-PC devices, mobile phones and PDAs. Firefox for mobile 1.0 uses the same version of the Gecko layout engine as Firefox 3.6.

The Mozilla Firefox developers are working on several different branches of the web browser at the same time. The latest public version, Firefox 3.6.6 just released today, and Firefox 3.7 which will be renamed to Firefox 4.0 later this year.

Firefox is a very useful and feature-rich browser, we all know that. But aside from being a robust Web browser, Firefox is appealing to more sophisticated users because of the support that it gets from third-party application developers.

Previews of Firefox 3.7, which will in time become 4.0, are now available. The Firefox developers have released a new preview version of Firefox 3.7 which includes many of the features planned for Firefox 4.0. The preview release includes special protection against rogue third-party processes that could crash the browser.

The Web Developer extension adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools. It is designed for Firefox, Flock  and Seamonkey, and will run on any platform that these browsers support including Windows, Mac OS  X and Linux.

Firefox, what's not to love about this open-source web browser? Well, a number of users following the development work on Ubuntu 8.10 (the Intrepid Ibex) are feeling rather outraged over Mozilla Firefox 3.0.2 and later. In the latest Ubuntu packages, Firefox requires an EULA (End-User License Agreement) be accepted the first time you launch the browser.
