DreamLinux Desktop 3.5 Edition was released on March 1st, 2009. The distro has experienced some significant changes recently and it really seemed to do it for me in the past so i thought I’d give it a try and see what it could offer me.

Just getting Dreamlinux Installed or running in anything but a VM has been a nightmare. It kernel panicked when booting from a flashdrive, and installation failed repeatedly.

Dreamlinux is a Debian-based distribution that offers you a choice of GNOME or Xfce window managers as well as an extremely simple installation and scripts to install popular programs not found in the Debian repositories. With included programs for communication, graphics, and music, plus OpenOffice.org, it covers most general desktop needs, and installation and configuration are a breeze.

So today I downloaded the latest edition of DreamLinux http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/. The last time I played with DreamLinux was around 8 months back and was really disappointed as it failed even to boot on my machine.

The Dreamlinux project, a Brazilian distribution based on Debian, Knoppix, and Morphix, today announced the release of a Multimedia GL edition of Dreamlinux 2.2. This live CD with a graphical hard disk installation option boots directly into an XFce desktop and features a 2.6.18.1 kernel and moderate-sized application package.

Dreamlinux is excellent for laptop users who only have wireless internet and want to run a Linux Live CD. It's also a dream-come-true for Linux beginners who don't want to or can't install the drivers.

Distro-hopping is easy and fun. Linux users distro-hop to solve problems and to try new software. But is it necessary? Haven't most Linux distributions reached a state of polish that makes distro-hopping unnecessary?
