MEPIS Linux, the KDE based Linux distribution, released the beta1 of MEPIS 8.5. MEPIS Linux was one of the easy to use Linux distributions besides PCLinuxOS, before Ubuntu arrived. The users who wanted to use the latest Debian's snapshot, but afraid of all those text mode configuration tricks found MEPIS as the Debian for the masses

I was glancing through the top searches for my site and noticed one string I thought I'd try to answer it. That search was openSUSE vs Ubuntu. Now, I've avoided formally comparing Ubuntu to other distros such as openSUSE or Mandriva before because in my book it's like comparing apples to oranges, but for the sake of those searching, I will try.

once I discovered SimplyMepis (also known as Mepis), I found that Knoppix was simply too time consuming. I enjoyed Mepis for a while, though I ended up moving to Ubuntu due to stagnation in Mepis development.

This time around I tried the daddy of many desktops, Debian Lenny, and compared it with Mepis 8.0 on my notebook. I am pleased Debian has made itself easy to install and use. However, Warren has spelled magic onto Debain through his much tested Mepis.

MEPIS has released SimplyMEPIS 7.0. The isos for the 32 and 64 versions are in the released directory at the MEPIS subscriber site and public mirrors. MEPIS 7.0 offers up to date user applications delivered on top of a Debian stable core.
