I spent the weekend installing a new motherboard in my audio/video production computer. What should have been a 30-minute chore turned into a vexing showstopper.

One of the big perks of using a Linux distribution is having a choice of what window manager you want to use. You can check out what’s available for Linux window managers and desktops here. The one I’ll be concentrating on is fluxbox, a window manager.

One of the many great things about using UNIX or a UNIX-like operating system is the ability to tailor your environment to your liking. If you want something less resource intensive that offers a greater degree of control then Fluxbox Window Manager is what you’re looking for.

I CAME quite late to the Fluxbox party, and now I am here I wish I had arrived earlier. Fluxbox is a lightweight window manager for the X window system used by Linux distributions. When I say “lightweight”, I mean it is not resource-hungry like, say, the KDE and GNOME desktop environments, and that once it is installed on your machine and configured properly, it is both stable and very quick.

Fluxbox is a fast and lightweight window manager for X, fluxbox was derived from blackbox and it is capable of launching applications, configuring keyboard shortcuts and background images, as well as displaying information with the slit. It is often used on older systems where hardware resources are limited or even just as a matter of personal taste.

Regular visitors to this site will know that Fluxbox is Trent’s and Patrick’s preferred window manager. I, too, am impressed with its speed and customizability, and its low overhead.

I’ve been following the development of this for some time, being a longtime Fluxbox enthusiast, and a relatively recent Linux Mint convert. This combines two of my favorite things in the Linux world, Fluxbox and Mint!
