Konsole is the app that probably almost every KDE developer uses on a daily basis, but there hasn’t been much development on the user interface front during the last releases. Nonetheless some recent changes may be worth blogging about.

Konsole has been a staple of KDE since KDE 2.0, as has been showing signs of a little bit of clutter and wear. So, Robert Knight has stepped in to clean up the program's code, and more than anything else, fix a cluttered and difficult interface.

I work a lot at the console level, I even lauch some programs directly from there, and I know there are a lot of users like me.

Somtimes I also open two or even three terminals to monitor differente processes on the same machine or even on different PCs using ssh connection.

The Linux world has everything, if you know where to find it, including an in-between option to the command-line interface, and a full-blown X Window System environment. Juliet Kemp talks about ncurses, the excellent graphical environment for the console.

Like all Linux distributions, Ubuntu 10.10, aka, Maverick Meerkat, the latest version of the popular Linux distribution, ships with a firewall installed. The firewall is actually embedded in the kernel. In Ubuntu, the firewall’s original command line interface has been replaced by ufw, a more user-friendly command line script.

There's a mix of graphical and console based applications included. Hopefully, there will be something of interest for all types of users.

In my last article I looked at gaming on Ubuntu Linux and concluded that it is alive and well! Now we head back into the "useful" side of Linux. Linux has a bad reputation of having to use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to do anything really useful. In this article I will talk about some graphical interfaces for tools to get those "useful" things done.
