Puppy Linux is a light weight Linux distribution built from scratch and born in mid 2002. It’s creator, Barry Kauler, originally created Puppy Linux as a fun project to do in his spare time.
Puppy Linux 4.3.0 was released several weeks ago and with it came several interesting developments. First, this release saw the return Barry Kauler, founder and project lead of Puppy Linux. Second, 4.3.0 includes some great new tools.
Barry Kauler is back at the helm of the Puppy Linux project, and he just released version 4.3 of the popular lightweight Linux distribution. Puppy Linux 4.3 is a massive upgrade from the 4.2 series, with almost all the components updated or replaced.
With the recent release of Puppy Linux 4.00, developer Barry Kauler and his team have provided a lightweight but functional Linux operating system. To help reduce size and include more functionality over the previous binary-package-based Puppy 3.01, Puppy 4.00 has been compiled from a Slackware 12-based source.
Puppy Linux founder Barry Kauler has announced the release of version 1.0 of Quirky, a Linux distribution aimed at developers for trying out "some quirky ideas"
Roll up Puppy Linux. Yet Another Linux Distro!?! No, it's not just another distro, this one is different and this is why. It runs off a live CD but the coolest thing is that you can now make your own custom cut-down Puppified linux from the distro of your choice using Puppy Woof!.
The most recent release of Puppy Linux, version 5.1 “Lucid Puppy” includes some significant changes such as binary compatibility with the Ubuntu 10.04 packages, easier package installation with Quickpet and Puppy Package Manager, a new Simple Network Setup utility and more. I dove into Puppy 5.1 over the weekend, took some screenshots, and made a video showing a few of Lucid Puppy's features.
I have used Puppy in the past, over a year ago, and I thought it was OK…just OK. Now you have to realize that Puppy is a small form distribution which is designed to use minimail resources and at the same time provide all of the functions that a Desktop user would want. All that said, when Puppy 4.1 came out I decided to look at it again….I am glad I did.
Puppy has long been the posterboy for all those who needed a light distribution. It is an independent distribution on diet by JWM and a careful selection of applications.
