Is the Linux development model flawed?

http://www.techworld.com

"Back in the early 1990s, when Linux initiator Linus Torwalds and open source software started to make headlines, the idea of giving software away seemed crazy. Looking at the headway the movement has made since then, you might be forgiven for wondering why Linux desktops have failed to become as ubiquitous as Linux servers are."

Spice up Windows - replace it! [with Linux]; part 5

http://blog-of-gentoo.blogspot.com

In my few previous posts I've stated that I'd like to help people to spice their system and move from Windows to Linux. But we all know that it cannot be done in an instant. I started to explain the process in last posts. I hope that to this point you got used to those applications I've suggested before. If not, just have another week or two using them, until you're comfortable enough with them.

2008 May Be the Year of the Open-Source Desktop

http://www.computerworld.com

The desktop is uncharted territory. Over the past year, I’ve been on a quest to find an operating system that balances ease of use, stability, low cost and high functionality...I think I can say when the open-source desktop will become a more widely deployed end-user operating system: when it becomes a product and not a project.

"Getting the most from open source"

http://news.bbc.co.uk

"Free. It is not something Western culture does particularly well. It is certainly not something that features big in the plans of the millionaires at Microsoft, Apple and Intel - to name but a few.But there is one crowd that lives for free technology, and it is not doing bad business either."

What is Microsoft really gaining from open source FUD?

http://blogs.zdnet.com

In all the stories about Microsoft’s attack on open source, I have seen little talk about what the company is gaining in all this.

Alan Cox interview

http://www.abclinuxu.cz

Alan Cox talks about cooperation with hardware vendors, patent law, microkernels, and GPLv3: "I think [the MS-Novell deal] is a bad idea and that Novell are going to get stung by the GPLv3, and rightfully so. The license is designed to keep the software free, if it fails to do this then it needs fixing, so GPLv3 hopefully will fix this flaw."

It's Time to Consider Open Source Software, Part 2

http://www.technewsworld.com

Training teachers and students to use a piece of software makes that software more valuable. Vendors know this. Business sense, not altruism, is what drives deep discounts on software for education. I once spoke to a vendor of an online grade book who, upon learning that I train teachers, was very interested in my using it in my classes.

They Will Be Known By Their Stripes

http://blog.lobby4linux.com

Doesn't it bother you, at least on some level, that Microsoft has found a way to profit from Linux? And profit greatly I might add. The idea of that is personally repulsive. Let me tell you what is not only repulsive, it's obscene.

Write to WBUR/NPR radio and tell them to stream in a format other than MP3!

http://binaryfreedom.info

MP3 is encumbered with patents which require listeners to buy licensed players or risk facing patent infringement lawsuits. Since WBUR is publicly funded, it seems silly for it to use resources to enrich a private enterprise. Listeners have already payed once to have the content made, so they shouldn't have to pay an extra MP3 tax.

SCO's 2Q Results Press Release and 8K, for all of us to enjoy

http://www.groklaw.net

Here's the press release on SCO's 2Q results as filed with the SEC as an attachment to SCO's 8K. Bleak as usual, with lots of upbeat talk about the future, as usual, at the conference call. No questions at all at the conference call, I'm told. What is there to say?
