Under Linux, it is possible to run a number of Windows applications without having Windows installed at all. This is done with Wine. I'm not talking about the fermented beverage some of us are quite fond of, but a package that runs on Linux. Allow me to paraphrase from the Wine Web site . Wine Is Not an Emulator.
I don't know how vital is Wine software for you anymore. I mean, I haven't used it for ages. May be because I am not a gamer of sorts and I don't use iPod. In case of applications, I have good alternatives for most of the windows specific applications. But for those who still can't live without Wine, here is the good news. Wine 1.2 RC3 is released with a lot of major bug fixes and improvements.
Wine Technology advances at a rapid rate, in the last month we have seen two updates to Wine 1.1.33 and 1.1.34. Many of us like to stay using the latest and greatest Wine software with good reason each new version typically fixes issues and improves performance however on occasion a new Wine release will suffer from some regressions...
This is release 1.0-rc1 of Wine, a free implementation of Windows on Unix.
This is the first release candidate for Wine 1.0. Please give it a good testing to help us make 1.0 as good as possible. In particular please help us look for apps that used to work, but don't now.
The Wine development release 1.2-rc1 is now available. The source is available now, Binary packages are in the process of being built, and will appear soon at their respective download locations. This is the first release candidate for Wine 1.2. It marks the beginning of the code freeze period. Please give this release a good testing to help us make 1.2 as good as possible.
Wine is nearing its 1.0 release, and we need your help to make sure it's a good one!
Wine has been under heavy development in recent months, and some applications that used to work well no longer do. But we don't know which ones! Please help us find them, so we can fix them. Here's how:
This is a 1.0 that I wasn't sure would ever come. No, I'm not talking about the Duke Nukem game that's been vaporware for the last decade or so -- I'm talking about Wine 1.0, which is slated for release on June 6th of this year. That's a mere 15 years after development was started.
The Wine team is proud to announce that Wine 1.0 is now available. This is the first stable release of Wine after 15 years of development and beta testing. Many thanks to everybody who helped us along that long road!
I was recently surprised to discover that many people are not familiar with WINE, what it does, or how easy it can be to make it do it. That, coupled with the recent post-beta, stable release of WINE itself, pushed me to help get the word out.
