Sometimes I sit back and wonder about the direction technology has taken, especially with regards to operating systems. I think back to my Apple days and even when I got my first PC running MS-DOS with Microsoft Windows 3.11. Obviously, some of you can go even further back in history while others not far at all.

FSDaily is a community driven site. Without submissions from the community there is no news for the FSDaily community. When you read a great free software related article you can share it with the rest of the free software community by submitting it to FSDaily yourself. An easy way to do this is using FSDaily Bookmarklets.

Another thing which is a trifle annoying is the amount of time taken to boot up and shut down. I have no idea why this is so. The first time I shut down the PC, I left the room and then came back and had a second look to see if I had actually initiated the shutdown.

A couple of months ago, Free Software Magazine (and FSDaily.com) went through what you'd call a "rough patch" in terms of hosting: 3FN, which hosted FSM, was effectively shut down by the FTC in the United States. Many companies had their backup servers on 3FN's networks - and therefore lost everything. We were lucky enough to have a full backup over in Europe.

Back in Linux's early days, Linuxcare emerged as the first important Linux support company. In 1998, the company made headlines not just in the technology press but in mainstream business publications like the Wall Street Journal as the company that would help businesses switch over to Linux. It was not to last.

Over the past few days, EFF and one of our staff technologists, the talented Micah Lee, have had an illuminating back and forth with Canonical Ltd over the use of the Ubuntu mark. While we don’t believe that Canonical has acted with malice or intent to censor, its silly invocation of trademark law is disturbing. After all, not everyone has easy recourse to lawyers and the ability to push back.

I used to love KDE way back in the KDE 1.x and KDE 2.x days of yore. I migrated away from KDE during the early 3.x days in favor of GNOME. I’m stepping back into KDE from a GNOME user’s viewpoint with a single question in my mind: “Does it work yet?”
