Some people seem to challenge the idea that most (if not all) free software projects need a benevolent dictator—that is, somebody who has the last say on every decision. They are quick to point out Linus Torvalds’ past “mistakes” (see the speech marks): using BitKeeper to manage the kernel, not allowing “pluggable” schedulers in Linux, etc.

This situation really doesn't sit right with me. I understand that Canonical needs to be creative in acquiring new revenue streams. The stumbling block for me is. Isn't Google using mostly Ubuntu guts/code under the hood of its upcoming Chrome OS? You would have thought that their must have been some sort of communication between Google from Canonical after Yahoo approached them with their offer.

Even though it's a corporation, Red hat has continually placed being a good member of the open source community over being one of the corporate community. Their dedication to open source is outstanding, and yet they receive very little thanks. As a stronghold and *the* prime of example of corporate GNU/Linux, they are an important domino. We have

When the Linux Foundation acquired the Linux.com domain from SourceForge earlier this year, it vowed to relaunch the site as more than just a go-to place for Linux-related news. The new site went live this morning and it's sporting enough bells and whistles to make any Linux enthusiast proud. The community has itself to thank, of course, since they came up with most of the ideas.
