Over time I have heard or read a lot of stories regarding attacks against open source software. In each of those stories open source has vigorously defended itself and occasionally even gone on the attack. Recently however,

Security researchers claim that a mass attack of websites is much worse than was feared. According to ScanSafe, the attack has affected at least 10,000 sites.

BIND 9 is a popular open source DNS server, and arguably the most deployed DNS server in use today. So even though this is a flaw in one DNS server (as opposed to DNS itself which was Kaminsky's flaw), it is highly critical.

Commercial DNS software firm Nominum has responded to the backlash against its criticism of open source alternatives. During interviews promoting its recently launched cloud-based DNS (Domain Name System) service, SKYE, Nominum slammed open source and freeware DNS packages as a recipe for security problems.
