I sit here watching the first emerge --sync go slowly scrolling by in preparation for my second go around with Funtoo. The Funtoo creator Daniel Robbins, the same man who gave us Gentoo, has started a new project for us geeks to play with.
"The other day I decided to give a try at Funtoo (for those that do not know it yet, a variant of Gentoo). I am very impressed with the improvements that Daniel Robbins has done so far..." —— See also: In 2 days: stable toolchain upgrade ——
«Funtoo is a free operating system, based on Gentoo, and initiated in 2008 by Daniel Robbins in a collaborative effort with Gentoo community [...] Funtoo can be defined as a user-focused distribution, with a bazaar-style development model, where each hacker can make a difference. Hackers can have fun too due to the free software nature of the project.
I have been planning to move to Funtoo Linux, a derivative of Gentoo Linux, for over a month now. The install is basically the same as a Gentoo installation. The only difference is that instead of using Gentoo’s Portage, you can choose to just use Daniel Robbin’s Funtoo git-based Portage located at Github.
In 2004 Daniel Robbins, the founder of Gentoo Linux, walked away from the project after creating the nonprofit Gentoo Foundation to handle its intellectual property (IP). In a blog post last month, Robbins wondered if he should take back the software, since it didn't appear the foundation was taking care of things.
Finally, I got Funtoo Linux, a derivative of Gentoo Linux, installed on my desktop. It took me three tries to finally get Funtoo Linux to run. Funtoo successfully booted up the first time. It was not difficult to install but then again, it was not easy. My goal is to create my own Gentoo-based distro using Metro.
« Hi All, Just wanted to announce the Funtoo Forums, which are now available for use at http://forums.funtoo.org. Please create an account and enjoy them. I hope that they will become a great resource for Funtoo users...»
While no official body has yet to confirm or spread news about it, Daniel Robbins, creator of Gentoo Linux, confirmed that the Gentoo Foundation’s charter has been revoked for the next several weeks. In layman’s terms, as of this moment the Gentoo Foundation no longer exists.
I recently began charting the freefall of the Gentoo Linux distribution. The project peaked in 2003 but has been in steady decline since Daniel Robbins got up from the captains chair.
