Organizers of the upcoming OpenSource World conference, previously known as LinuxWorld, broadened the event program and are offering free admission, hoping to attract more attendees in a time of slashed travel budgets and increased competition from similar shows

"LinuxWorld San Francisco is the annual love fest for Linux aficionados. This year's iteration will attempt to share the love with virtualization and energy usage, as the show is being co-located with the Next-Generation Data Center (NGDC) conference."

The recent LinuxWorld Conference & Expo drew a broad cross-section of users, from cautious onlookers trying to gauge how Linux and other open source software could fit into their organizations to converts hoping to expand their use of such technologies.

IDG World Expo has teamed up with open source security gateway provider Untangle and electronics recycler Alameda County Computer Resource Center (ACCRC) to host an Installfest for Schools at LinuxWorld Conference and Expo in San Francisco next week. Volunteers will refurbish older discarded computers with free and open source software (FOSS) before they are donated to schools in need.

As more than 11,000 attendees prepare to converge on San Francisco for the LinuxWorld Conference & Expo next week, one industry analyst says customers are evaluating open-source software the same way they evaluate proprietary software: It has to be priced right and work well.
