Mozilla's big plan on Tuesday to set a world record for downloads with the newly released Firefox 3 browser hit a snag when its Web site would not work properly.

The Mozilla Foundation, the non-profit organisation behind the Firefox web browser, has published its first ever Quarterly Analyst Report on the state of the internet and its browser's worldwide market share

Firefox for Mobile (codenamed Fennec) is the name of the build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for smaller non-PC devices, mobile phones and PDAs. Firefox for mobile 1.0 uses the same version of the Gecko layout engine as Firefox 3.6.

Desktop users, developers, and reviewers all had their download managers aimed at the Firefox Web site Monday to grab Firefox 3 as soon as it launched and also help Mozilla set a world record. World record or not, the latest Firefox release is a world-class Web browser. It looks impressive, renders text and images better than its predecessor, and helps you browse safely.

Although Firefox 3.5 (formerly Firefox 3.1) is still in beta, Mozilla is already developing Firefox 3.6 code-named Namoroka. Slated for an early-to-mid 2010 release, the browser will be marketed as Firefox.next (FX) moniker in a nod to new technologies set to take Firefox to the next level.

"The most significant addition in alpha 7 is backend support for full-page zoom, which showed up in the nightly builds late last month. The alpha 7 release also includes support for SVG lighting and tile filters, redesigned XUL menus and tooltips, long-awaited color management support (still disabled by default), and support for cross-site XMLHttpRequest.."

Mozilla has released a fifth Firefox 4.0 development preview , labelled Firefox 3.7 Alpha 5, based on the latest Gecko web rendering platform. This alpha adds support for the WebM video format, and there are 64-bit builds for Linux and Mac OS X

Mozilla today released Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate 2, which you can download from Mozilla's Web site. Release Candidate 2 is the first version of Firefox 3.5 that average users might want to run, since it's faster and more stable than the beta versions were. Firefox 3.5 boasts a number of significant changes.

On the back of the release last week of Firefox 3.0, Mozilla's open-source browser gained market share at the expense of rivals Internet Explorer (IE) and Safari, Net Applications said Monday.
