Mozilla has launched a contest to spur on development of add-ons for its recently-released Firefox for Mobile browser. Between now and April 12, developers are encouraged to create extensions or other add-ons tailored for the mobile browser.

Firefox for Mobile (codenamed Fennec) is the name of the build of the Mozilla Firefox web browser for smaller non-PC devices, mobile phones and PDAs. Firefox for mobile 1.0 uses the same version of the Gecko layout engine as Firefox 3.6.

The first 'Open C Challenge' is a global contest for mobile application development for S60 on Symbian OS smartphones. It is aimed at encouraging open source and freeware developers to use Nokia's Open C environment, to create innovative mobile applications.

Firefox mobile is heading to Android, slowly. The mobile version of Firefox's browser, called Fennec, is still only available for the Windows Mobile and Maemo platform, a soon-to-be redundant operating system only used on a couple of Nokia devices.

The Mobile Version of the much celebrated Firefox Web Browser is all set to roll out this month. Facing tough competition to Opera Mini Browser, Firefox Mobile will be first available in Nokia's new N900 handset. The N900 runs on Maemo operating system which is yet another Linux inspired software.

In an announcement on his blog, developer Mike Schroepfer has revealed Mozilla's plans to revitalize its mobile development efforts.

The Mozilla Foundation has stopped development of a mobile version of its Firefox web browser for Microsoft's Windows Mobile platform. The reason for the decision is that Windows Mobile 7 doesn't support native applications. Until this decision Windows Mobile was one of just two platforms that were supported by Fennec, the mobile version of Firefox.
