I strongly believe - and so do most non-geek Linux users- that there was a time when the terminal was a very vital component of Linux: a time when Linux was mainly a hobbyist OS that was used by only geeks, most of whom disliked anything remotely akin to graphics. However, in today's OS world...

The Linux blogosphere was buzzing last week with chatter about an article that asked who the top 10 geeks of all time are. Topping the list was Linus Torvalds, and notably absent were both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs -- omissions that sparked significant discussion.

Hydrogen is an advanced drum machine for GNU/Linux, although there also appears to be a Windows installer available (it could be dated -I haven't tested it-). 'Its main goal is to bring professional yet simple and intuitive pattern-based drum programming', reads their website, and by god, intuitive it is!

Let's call that site the Geek Ranch. (When I say "let's" I mean us, not everyone. While its primary focus is to appeal to geeks, we will have to call it something else for general marketing.) As far as a site, it is about 265 acres of land in the mountains of the Tisey Preserve near Estelí, Nicaragua.

While there is a lot more to it than just being for geeks, here is the geek angle. The property will have "geek cabinas" scattered around a pine forest within the property. If you want to escape from the rat race for a while--a month, six months, whatever--you will be able to inexpensively rent a private cabina. It will come with Internet connectivity, maid service and all your meals. In other words, no routine responsibilities.

I have been watching Linux for years, but it has never been my main operating system, Windows and Mac do dominate my life, but I feel a change is starting to come. In my mind Mac OS X is still the operating system to beat and Windows is a long way from catching up. Linux on the other hand is getting closer with every release.

So Amanda has been watching me use my computer for years. She's seen the evolution of my computer usage over time as I have transitioned from OS to OS. When I started using Linux she called it the black hole for it's color and ability to gain my sole attention for hours on end, and with no tangible results, seemingly to her. I was solely using Gentoo then.

Recently some friends were spending most of their time in solving the Rubik’s Cube (3×3x3), finding new fascinating algorithms and reducing their time to the minimum. But as professional geeks they decided to take it one step further.

One thing that I would probably have on my “50 Things I Should Do Before I Die” list (remind me to compile that), is create my own distro. And of course all of us Linux geeks would immediately think Linux From Scratch!
