Linux desktop adoption is going
Linux desktop adoption is going on at double or triple the growth of that other OS. The small base currently will increase rapidly and still be small for a time. Inside the US, too many are locked-in because they have been using that other OS longer than in other parts of the world. The media formats are irrelevant for most businesses who use PC s to generate/modify their own data.
The Vista flop will give a big spike to those frustrated with current offerings of that other OS and more will consider FLOSS as time goes on. Business will take up FLOSS as it is considered a competitive/efficient advantage. Individuals will take up FLOSS as they encounter it pre-installed and advertised. Dell is expanding production/sale of FLOSS so they must be making money, even in the US.
