There are some in this world who believe that Linux is the king of all operating systems. In some ways I agree with them because Linux certainly is a big player in the server world. It may lack in market share in the the desktop sector, but that doesn't mean it's a lesser operating system.

There's no question that Ubuntu dominates the desktop-Linux world.  With commanding market share and a huge user community, it's by far the most well supported and documented open-source platform in the desktop world.  On servers, however, the situation is different - and Canonical needs to address it if it wants to become a real player in the server market.

IDC figures show that Linux has actually lost market share to Windows Server over the last three years.

So it is time to start screaming in panic, start selling Novell and Red Hat stock for anything we can get, and enroll in MCSE (Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer) night classes? Eh, I don't think so.

Earlier this week an article concerning Vista and market share and one about how Open Source Software has cost the IT Industry $60 Billion dollars over the last five years or so hit the newswire. Needless to say this generated some conversations about their validity.

It appears from almost two years of IDC data that the Unix/Linux share of the market is stabilizing in the 40-45% range. The major question is how quickly Linux systems will displace Unix. That’s the market chunk that Red Hat (RHT) is aiming at with its recent announcement that it plans to “own” 50% of the server market by 2015.

Linux as an Operating System, not just a specific distribution, but all of them. The collective. has been an institution in and of itself for several years now in the server world. Linux and FOSS server software together has developed a dominating presence in the business/server world.

I have always claimed that the widely used Operating System market share statistics from Net applications were not really accurate when it comes to MacOS and Linux market share. In my opinion there were two factors that prevented an accurate Worldwide market share to be produced: Linux browsers potentially ignoring the counter and improper geographical distribution.
