What’s the point of Gobuntu’s existence if it still contains non-free components? Apparently, Canonical even went to the trouble of removing everything except the copyrighted-all-rights-reserved image files. i’m left scratching my head, wondering why they bothered with this farce if they weren’t prepared to go all the way?

What? The FSF is about free software.
What? The FSF is about free software. The media that accompanies the software is less important compared to the software that a user will use.

No, media is pretty improtant.
No, media is pretty improtant. It represent our culture, our values, etc.
If you think about it... FSF is more than just about free software, it is about freedom. FSF doesn't just promote Free software, it opposes such things as DRM.

I have no problem with mass communication
I have no problem with mass communication (media) being important to culture. However, consuming proprietary cultural media will not prevent us from controlling our own machines. Accepting proprietary software will prevent us from controlling our machines and prevent us from helping other people to control theirs. Complying with an author's wish to not share proprietary media only harms the author as they won't be able to get more people appreciating their work. We can ignore it and go appreciate something else.
The freedom that the FSF is campaigning for is the user's right to help themselves through software (right to use and tinker) and the right to help neighbours and the community through sharing software. DRM interferes with these freedoms as it removes the user's right to control their own machine.
Proprietary mass communication does not. It is usually trivial to ignore any proprietary media. Not being able to listen to unauthorised copies of Metallica while we work will not prevent us from completing our work for example. It is much more difficult to ignore software that is technically trivial to modify.
