What's driving me to put Gimp 2.4 on my Slackware box (my main office) is that I can never again do a Gimp tutorial until I am set up with 2.4. The interface overhaul is just too massive; every Gimp tutorial currently published in print or the web has now become worthless.

The GIMP image editor is preparing for the start of a new development cycle, and you can have your say in the way the next version looks by submitting a mock-up to the GIMP UI Brainstorm blog. User interface designer Peter Sikking spoke with us about the project and how it fits into the larger work of creating the GIMP's UI.

For many Linux users, The GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Project) seems to mostly be a tool of mystery and confusion. The biggest reason for this is lack of exposure. Most users that complain about The GIMP’s interface really only need to get to know the interface.

Imagine forgetting about gimp's interface and just using it. This alternative interaction for the Gnu Image Manipulation Program would allow for custom, and dynamic gestures to be created for all aspects of it's interface, similar to the way in which a command line interface is habit forming.

KDE's window-specific settings feature gives you a fine level of control over the way windows behave. It lets you change settings such as minimum/maximum size, position, overlay, and transparency. The GIMP uses multiple windows to select tools, tool options, and other items used in the process of image editing.

One of the most questioned and discussed issues about GIMP is the Graphical User Interface. Many users (mostly new ones to GIMP) are confused by it so it is well worth to talk about this never ending discussion.

GIMP is a great image editor but the lack of a single interface window and various other features, make it not ideal to take on Adobe Photoshop as a viable alternative.
