It was an idea six months ago. That idea was conceptualised and later, was named Freedom Walk-A walk to claim,ensure and preserve freedom. Started off from Kasargode on Oct 2, our team of volunteers criss-crossed through the length and breadth of Kerala touching all the 14 districts, and spreading the message of freedom among the people.

It was an idea six months ago. That idea was conceptualised and later, was named Freedom Walk-A walk to claim,ensure and preserve freedom. Started off from Kasargode on Oct 2, our team of volunteers criss-crossed through the length and breadth of Kerala touching all the 14 districts, and spreading the message of freedom among the people.

What is this freedom that we are talking about?

It is the freedom to live our lives to its fullest without harming anybody else and without violating any of our accepted social norms. There are several areas of life where we invoke this freedom. We are primarily concerned with three different areas - Software Freedom, Freedom from Social Evils, Freedom to live our future.

Freedom walk is a project aimed at spreading the message of 'Freedom in Society', 'Freedom from Environmental Issues', and 'Freedom in Software' and to promote activism around these freedoms.

Another positive and unexpected outcome from the walk was that free software communities, all over Kerala, came together to help organise the event and make it a success.
... Besides that most media had sidelined the social and environmental aspect of their walk and concentrated only on the free software aspect.

"...We saw how Free Software has come to stay in Kerala. The natural question this raises is, “Why Kerala?” There is no other state in the country where Free Software has made an impact that is anywhere near that in Kerala. This itself could be the subject for an entire thesis, and this is certainly not the place to enter into a serious analysis of the question.

Anoop presented the vision behind the Freedom Walk and offered Free Software as a viable solution for the technical needs and offered help from the Free Software community inexploring possible technical opportunities. The dean was impressed with the concept and he requested for workshops on Free Software and possibly on Free Software GIS software also.

"... «I ask you to please always call it Free Software because that way you will encourage other people to pay attention to the question of freedom. The term Open Source was formulated by people who did not want to talk about freedom and that is the stupidest thing any people can do.
