DesktopBSD has moved into Vietnam when it was recently added to the Vietnam BSD/Linux Mirror by the Saigon Linux Group and GHP Far East, two companies promoting open source technology in Vietnam.

The European Union funded FLOSSCom research project is investigating Free / Libre Open Source Software (FLOSS) communities as learning environments. The project aims to identify principles of FLOSS communities that could be transferred to educational settings, e.g. how the community model could help to improve education.

VTV, one of the major news channels in Vietnam, visited my Linux lab today at the American International School. I am glad that Vietnam is taking a stronger interest in Linux and Open Source.

Today I attended the Saigon Software Freedom Day 2009 organized by a very active 19 year Vietnamese open source advocate and leader of the rejuvenated Saigon Linux User Group.

The Saigon Linux Group added PC-BSD to it's Vietnam BSD/Linux Public Mirror in efforts to promote open source technology in Vietnam.

About three weeks ago, I was given a new group of Teen Immersion students to work with at the American International School in Saigon, Vietnam. Since I am their Computer Science teacher, you guessed it, I had them using Linux Mint during the first week of class.

"Software patents are evil." Ask almost any free or open source software advocate, and they'll tell you that software patents kill creativity and keep computer science from advancing as rapidly as it would if everyone shared their basic work with everyone else, unencumbered by patents or other restrictions.
