I've been using Ubuntu 10.04 on a production machine for about 10 days.  Now that I've gotten to know it better, here are some thoughts on what I like and dislike about the latest and greatest version of the world's most popular Linux distribution.

Recently, I stumbled upon a new Linux distribution aimed at the x86, general use, desktop microcomputer. Naturally, I had a bit of an urge to groan, moan, and otherwise throw a temper tantrum. The predisposition to loathe new Linux distributions is not based in a dislike of Linux distribution plurality, but more of a dislike for redundancy.

I love Ubuntu as it is simply the best operating system that I have come across. If there is one thing that I dislike about Ubuntu, it has to be the desktop. Don’t get me wrong, it is not GNOME that I dislike, but the default color and theme that Ubuntu use for their distribution. I just can’t stand the brown color and theme.

As it turns out, I start to dislike the way the KDE project is proceeding, and I don’t refer to the Gentoo KDE project, but to the whole of KDE project.

Lately I have written various articles that have stirred the pot regarding the various Linux distributions available. I have heard quite a bit of dislike for Ubuntu, GNOME, and KDE 4. In fact I have heard opinions from people that make me wonder why they even use Linux.

This story has begun by a blog post from a man called Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols. He is ex-ZDNet and somewhat famous Linux journalist and long time KDE user. He tried out KDE 4.04 and dislike it (like me). Some might say KDE 4.0 is just developer preview (then why release it at first, huh?). He then tried KDE 4.1beta (which I haven’t) and also hate it.

If you come from the world of Windows, you undoubtedly understand the concept of a shortcut. In the Linux world, shortcuts do exist, but they're generally referred to as symbolic links, or symlinks. They are so named because, like shortcuts, a symlink is really just a symbolic placeholder or link to the file or directory you're trying to get at.

A search for "linux ready for desktop" brings millions of results on any search engine. The phrase "Linux Desktop Year" has been around 5 years now. Over the years, the question on its validity has been asked again and again. Fundamentally what does one mean by "Linux Desktop Year"?
