The desktop is uncharted territory. Over the past year, I’ve been on a quest to find an operating system that balances ease of use, stability, low cost and high functionality...I think I can say when the open-source desktop will become a more widely deployed end-user operating system: when it becomes a product and not a project.

There's no "year of the open source
There's no "year of the open source desktop" any more than there was a year of the proprietary desktop. It just keeps improving, sometimes gradually, and sometimes rapidly.

Well you could define the year
Well you could define the year of fs on the desktop as the year when it takes more than 50% of the desktop market. That probably won't be for a few more years yet. Unless MS decides to free its software... :P
